So I just recently read about the Raspberry Pi 3, so I wasn’t sure when it would actually be available. But the Raspberry Pi Foundation has never been known to drag their feet, so the Raspberry Pi 3 is now available for sale. And as expected (but still surprising in my opinion) the Raspberry Pi 3 is still only $35. When I bought my Raspberry Pi Model B over 2 years ago, I had to check daily because they sold out immediately and even when I ordered one, I had to wait several weeks for it to be in-stock and ship. But even with all the hype and popularity, the Raspberry Pi was still only $35. So fast-forward to today, and what does $35 get you:
- 1.2GHz 640bit quad-core ARM Cortex-A53 CPU (~10x the performance of the Raspberry Pi 1)
- Integrated 802.11n wireless LAN and Bluetooth 4.1
- Broadcom VideoCore IV GPU
- 1GB LPDDR2 RAM
- HDMI
- 4x USB 2.0
- microSD slot for storage
Again, that’s a lot to put in something with roughly the foot-print of a deck of cards and all for just $35. I just checked element14 and RS Components – and I think this news is a little too fresh since their partners seem down – at least the ones based in the US. I’ll be checking again later.
